How to successfully register a .AU domain name

The auDA has strict policies on the registration of .AU domain names.

Your domain name needs to be an Exact Match to your business/company/entity name or at least you must have a Close and Substantial Connection to qualify to register that domain name.

This guide is designed to assist you in getting the registration right, so it goes through smoothly.

To successfully register a .AU domain name you need to know the following before you start the process:

Of course you need to know what domain name you would like to register. Our system will check to see if it’s available.

Then you need to have at the ready (sample registration shown at the bottom of this page):

Your Registrant Name (item 1)

Type in your business, entity, organisation name

Your Registrant ID (item 2)

Type in your ABN, ACN, Business number which matches your Registrant Name

Your Registrant Type (item 3)

Just select ABN, ACN or Registered Business number from the drop down

Your Eligibility Name (item 4)

Type in your Registrant Name. That is your business, entity, organisation name

Your Eligibility ID (item 5)

Type in your ABN, ACN, Business number which matches your Registrant Name

Your Eligibility ID Type (item 6)

Usually the same as your Registrant ID. That is your ABN, ACN, Business number which matches your Eligibility Name

Your Eligibility Type (item 7)

Select which kind of entity you operate eg Company, Sole Trader, Partnership, Association (there are many options to choose from)

NOTE: These details are usually the same, and yes you need to input them twice.

Eligibility Reason (item 8)

Simply put does your domain name match the Registrant Name?

For example, if you are registering “yourdomain.com.au” then an Exact Match is that your Registrant Name is Your Domain Pty Ltd or Your Domain

If your domain name and your registrant name do not match then just select Close and Substantial Connection

Nameservers (item 9)

If you are going to host your domain with DISKMANdotNet, leave the entries as they are. Otherwise delete what is in there and replace with your host’s nameserver entries.

EXAMPLE .AU DOMAIN REGISTRATION

After you check for your desired domain name’s availability you can add the item to your cart and go to checkout. As you proceed you’ll get to a page which asks you to enter the registration details:

We have a business which has the following details:

Domain requested: yourdomain.com.au
Business/entity name: Business XYZ
Business/entity type: Sole Trader
ABN: 12 345 678 910
Eligibility Reason: Close and Substantial Connection

This submission will result in a successful domain name registration.
